Medical and Infectious Waste Safe methods of disposal for medical wastes such as sharps or needles are necessary for many people who may routinely check their own blood levels or give themselves medical injections. Be extremely careful; if these needles are not properly disposed of, they could injure a Davis Waste Removal or Landfill employee. Sharps resulting from home therapeutic use should be placed in a sturdy container protected from human contact and can be put in the trash. Physicians offices, dental offices, and hospitals which create a larger volume of medical and infectious waste may not dispose of these wastes in the trash. The California Department of Health Services Medical Waste Management Program regulates businesses in Yolo County which generate medical and infectious waste. For more information on proper disposal of these wastes, contact the Department of Health Services at (916) 327-6904 or the Yolo County Environmental Health Department at 666-8646. For a list of companies that provide collection services for businesses look in the Yellow Pages under "waste disposal - medical & infectious."
Explosive, Ammunition, and Radioactive Material If you have explosive or radioactive materials, do not bring them to a HHW drop-off day. Call the Yolo Explosive Bomb Investigative Unit at 661-5900 for details on proper disposal.
Poison The UC Davis Medical Center Regional Poison Center provides comprehensive poison information to the public. The Center is staffed 24 hours a day. Call 800-876-4766 for emergency information. Information is available to make your home safer for your children. To obtain a free checklist and stickers, write to Regional Poison Center, UC Davis Medical Center, 2315 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817.

When disposal of hazardous waste is needed, commercial generators should contact a licensed hazardous waste hauler. Local licensed haulers can be located in the Yellow Pages under "waste disposal -hazardous." Commercial waste is NOT accepted at household hazardous waste days.
If your business generates less than 220 pounds per month of the most common hazardous materials (i.e. paints, solvents , chemicals or less than 2.2 pounds of acutely hazardous waste (i.e. mercury or some lab chemicals), it may qualify for participation in the Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (CESQG) Program. To schedule an appointment, call 800-952-5566. For future dates call Yolo County Public Works at 757-5564 or check the city's web page at http://www.davisrecycling.org. There is a small fee involved in the collection of CESQG hazardous wastes. Prices will vary considerably depending on the amount of contamination and actual chemical constituency.
